Appliqué & Special Decoration

Appliqué stitches fabric onto fabric. A shape is cut from one cloth and sewn onto the garment, giving a design physical depth, a raised edge and a texture that no printing method can reproduce. It is the oldest decoration technique in apparel and still the one that reads most immediately as a considered, premium product.

We do appliqué and embellishment work at our Leicester site, on the same premises as the embroidery machines, the print presses and the dyehouse. It is a craft rather than a machine setting, and the difference between good and poor appliqué shows from across a room.

What Appliqué Gives You That Print Cannot

Print puts colour on the surface of a garment. Appliqué puts a second fabric on it. That means the design has thickness, a stitched edge and a different texture and sheen from the body of the garment, and it catches light differently as the wearer moves.

Materials can be mixed deliberately for that reason. A matte twill shape on a jersey body, a contrasting weight, a different weave, a colour that shifts in the light. The technique also handles bold, simple shapes at large scale beautifully, which is exactly where a large print can start to feel heavy on the fabric.

Types of Appliqué and Embellishment

Single and Multi-Layer Appliqué

One fabric shape stitched to the garment, or several layered to build depth and dimension. Multi-layer work is where the technique becomes genuinely three-dimensional, and it is a design decision worth making early because it affects how the artwork has to be drawn.

Appliqué With Embroidery

Stitch used both to hold the fabric and to add detail on top of it. A common pattern is an appliquéd body shape with embroidered type or line work over it, which gives you scale and detail in one placement. Our embroidery team runs on the same site, so both are done in one pass rather than two suppliers.

Choosing Materials and Working Up a Design

Appliqué is not a file you send and collect. Material choice, fabric weight, edge finish, stitch type and placement all change the result, and they interact with each other. We work through those choices with you rather than defaulting to whatever is on the machine, and our apparel graphic design team can develop or adapt artwork so it works as appliqué rather than as a print that has been converted.

Bear in mind that a design drawn for printing usually needs simplifying for appliqué. Fine detail cannot be cut and stitched, and a design with fifteen small elements becomes fifteen separate pieces of fabric. Bold shapes are the technique’s strength and it is worth designing to it.

Quality Control and Production

All decoration work is carried out and monitored at our own facility, on modern machinery, by a team that does this work daily. Garments are checked as they move through rather than only at the end. Appliqué is unforgiving of a placement that drifts, so this is checked as it runs, not signed off afterwards.

Minimums for appliqué and embellishment depend on the design, the materials and the volume, and are confirmed when we quote. Standard production turnaround is 5 to 10 working days from approval of artwork and payment, with sampling and material selection in front of that. Ask for a sample on this one. It is a technique you need to see in the hand.
