T-Shirt GSM Explained: What the Number Actually Tells You

GSM stands for grams per square metre, and it is the standard way of describing how heavy a fabric is. On most t-shirt spec sheets it is the only number given about the fabric itself, so it ends up carrying more weight in buying decisions than it probably should.

The figure is useful. It is also widely misread. A higher number does not automatically mean a better shirt, and the effect GSM has on how a print turns out barely gets a mention in the guides that explain it.

A standard retail t-shirt in the UK usually sits between 160 and 180 GSM. That range is where most blanks used for printing land, and it is a sensible default when nobody has specified anything.

What GSM does to print quality

This is the part rarely covered elsewhere, and it is the reason we get asked about GSM more often than you might expect.

Lighter fabrics are generally more open in the knit. Ink has less material to sit on and can sink further into the weave, which makes solid coverage harder to achieve and can leave a print looking slightly washed out. On very light garments a bold block of colour may also show through faintly from the back.

Heavier fabrics give a flatter, denser and more stable surface. Ink sits where it is put, opacity is easier to reach, and fine detail holds its edges better. For screen printing in particular, a denser fabric makes it easier to lay down a clean, opaque deposit in a single pass.

Digital direct-to-garment printing is more sensitive again. DTG sprays ink into the fibres rather than onto the surface, so a smooth, tightly knitted, high-cotton fabric produces noticeably sharper results than a loose or heavily textured one. Very heavy garments can need more pre-treatment to reach the same finish.

Choosing a t-shirt GSM by use case

Tour and event merch. 160 to 185. Heavy enough that prints look solid on a merch table, light enough that you are not paying to ship weight around the country. See band and tour merch printing.

Retail ranges. 180 to 220 for anything positioned as premium. Weight is one of the first things a customer registers when they pick a garment up, and a thin shirt undermines a premium price before the print is even considered.

Oversized and streetwear fits. 220 and above. A boxy cut needs the fabric to hold its shape, and a lightweight oversized tee tends to hang limply.

Workwear and uniforms. 185 to 220. These get washed constantly, and heavier fabric survives it better.

Promotional giveaways. 130 to 150. Cost per unit matters more than longevity when the garment is free.

Why a higher GSM is not always better

Weight brings trade-offs that spec sheets do not list.

Heavier garments cost more to buy and more to post, and on a direct-to-customer model that difference lands on every single order. They also take longer to dry and can feel uncomfortable in warm weather or under stage lighting, which is worth thinking about for summer festival merch.

Drape changes too. A 220 GSM shirt holds a boxy shape, and that is exactly right for an oversized fit and exactly wrong for a fitted women’s tee, where the fabric needs to fall rather than stand.

GSM is not the only measure of t-shirt quality

Two shirts at the same GSM can feel completely different, and this is where relying on the single number goes wrong.

Yarn matters. Combed and ring-spun cotton produces a smoother, softer surface than carded open-end cotton at identical weight, and it takes fine print detail better. Knit construction matters, with a tight single jersey behaving very differently from a looser knit at the same GSM. Finishing matters, since enzyme washing and pre-shrinking change how a garment feels and how it behaves after the first wash.

What is a good GSM for a t-shirt? For most purposes, 160 to 180. That range is comfortable to wear, takes print well and suits retail and merch use. Go heavier for premium or oversized ranges, lighter for promotional garments where cost per unit is the priority.

Is 180 GSM good for a t-shirt? Yes. 180 GSM is a solid midweight, at the upper end of standard retail weight. It holds a print well, feels substantial without being hot, and is a reliable default when you are not sure.

Is a higher GSM always better? No. Higher GSM means more fabric, which brings durability and structure but also more cost, more shipping weight and less drape. The right GSM depends on the garment’s fit, its use and how it will be sold.

What GSM is a standard t-shirt? Most standard t-shirts sit between 150 and 185 GSM. Blanks used for printing usually fall between 160 and 180.

Does GSM affect printing? Yes. Denser fabrics give a flatter, more stable surface, making opacity and fine detail easier to achieve. Lighter and more open knits absorb more ink and can produce a softer, less solid result. Knit construction and yarn type affect this as much as the GSM figure does.
