There are seven decoration methods in regular use on t-shirts, and most guides cover two of them properly and mention the rest in passing. The choice usually comes down to three things: how many pieces you need, how complicated the artwork is, and what the garment is made of.
We run all seven in-house at our Leicester site, so what follows is a description of what each one is actually good at rather than a case for whichever one we happen to sell.

Screen printing
A stencil of each colour is burned into a fine mesh screen, and ink is pushed through it onto the garment with a squeegee, one colour at a time, before being cured with heat.
Making the screens costs the same whether you print 25 shirts or 2,500, so the price per unit falls sharply as the run grows. Those economics have made screen printing the standard for tour runs, retail drops and anything else at volume. It also lays down the thickest ink deposit of any method here, so screen prints stay opaque on dark garments and survive years of washing.
Metallic, puff and foil finishes are only available through screen printing, since they are physical ink effects rather than image data. We print up to 24 colours, with each additional colour adding setup.

DTG (direct-to-garment) printing
DTG works like a large inkjet. The garment is loaded flat and pre-treated, then water-based ink is sprayed straight onto the fabric and absorbs into the fibres.
No screens means no setup, and no reason to limit the number of colours in a file. A photograph costs the same to print as a two-colour logo, which makes single pieces viable and removes the risk from testing a design before committing to quantity.
The finish is softer than screen printing and slightly less opaque on dark garments. Durability is good without quite matching a cured screen print, and results are noticeably better on high cotton content than on heavy blends.

Hybrid printing
Hybrid printing combines digital printing with traditional screen printing in one process. The digital element brings the wider colour range and vibrancy of DTG, while the screen printing element brings the speed that makes high-volume work economic.
The reason it matters is that detailed artwork and large quantities normally pull in opposite directions. A photographic or heavily graduated design is slow and expensive to separate into screens, but running thousands of pieces through a DTG press is slower still. Hybrid removes that trade-off and holds quality steady whether the order is small or large.
For retail ranges and full tour programmes with detailed artwork, hybrid is frequently the right answer.

Sublimation printing
Sublimation uses heat and pressure to turn dye into gas, which bonds directly with polyester fibres and becomes part of the fabric rather than a layer on top of it.
Nothing else produces a result with genuinely zero hand feel, and nothing else handles edge-to-edge all-over prints as cleanly. Sportswear, performance kit and full-coverage designs are where it earns its place.
The constraints are firm. Sublimation only works on polyester or polyester-coated surfaces, so it will not print on a cotton t-shirt. It also needs a light or white base, because the dye is translucent and cannot be laid over a dark colour.

DTF and transfer printing
The design is printed onto a film, coated with adhesive, and heat-pressed onto the garment.
Because the print never has to bond with the fabric directly, transfer methods work across materials that defeat other processes, including polyester, blends and technical fabrics. Fine detail and complex colour come through cleanly, and small quantities are straightforward since there is no setup to absorb.
The print sits on the surface, so the finish is less soft than DTG and less substantial than screen printing. For mixed-fabric orders, or intricate artwork in low quantities, it often beats both.

Embroidery
Thread is stitched directly into the fabric following a digitised version of your artwork.
Embroidery reads as more premium than any printed finish, and it lasts as long as the garment. Caps, polos, workwear, jackets and anything positioned upmarket are the natural fits. It also handles heavy and textured fabrics that printing struggles with.
Cost is driven by stitch count rather than colour count, so a dense design costs more than a sparse one at the same size. Fine detail, gradients and photographic images are beyond it, and very small text tends to fill in.

Appliqué and special decoration
Pieces of fabric are cut to shape and stitched onto the garment, creating a layered, textured, three-dimensional finish.
The look is instantly recognisable from varsity jackets and premium streetwear, and it works best on bold shapes and large designs where the texture can be seen. Combining appliqué with embroidery or print produces finishes that no single method reaches on its own.
It costs more per piece than printing and is not suited to fine detail, so it tends to appear on hero pieces rather than across a whole range.

What is the best t-shirt printing method? There is no single best method. Screen printing wins on volume and durability, DTG on small runs and photographic detail, sublimation on all-over polyester prints, embroidery on premium logo work. The right choice depends on quantity, artwork and fabric.
Which t-shirt printing method lasts longest? Embroidery, since it is stitched rather than applied and lasts as long as the garment. Among printing methods, a properly cured screen print is the most durable.
What is the cheapest way to print t-shirts? For large quantities, screen printing, because the setup cost spreads across the run. For small quantities, DTG, because there is no setup to spread. The crossover point depends on how many colours are in the design.
Can you print on polyester t-shirts? Yes, though not with every method. Sublimation is made for polyester. DTF and transfer printing handle it well. DTG performs best on high cotton content, so it is usually the wrong choice for a polyester garment.
